Nets on Fire is a non-profit basketball gym located in Saint George, Utah. The facility features four National Basketball Association (NBA) sized courts that hold tournaments, leagues, training camps, and rents space out to others for athletic and non-athletic events. Nets on Fire offers individual, group, and team basketball training for K-12th grade and works with both boys and girls of all skill levels. This is a facility that is always busy and that brings in athletes of all ages and abilities. The owners wanted an audio system that could really pump up the energy and that also features intercom and microphone capabilities for the tournaments and other general announcement purposes.

The Nets on Fire team approached us at Glitch Busters and asked if we would be up for the task. Already on the project deploying a full Ubiquiti Unifi networking stack, including a security gateway, cloud key, POE networking switches, access points, and IP cameras, we reached out to Soundvision for help in designing an audio solution for Nets on Fire.

Whereas the gym was already an existing building, we leveraged Soundvision’s design team, wherein they were able to take the dimensions of each gym and the approximate location of the existing lights and generate a system design that was in line with the owner’s performance and budgetary expectations.

The layout of this facility is essentially two gyms with two basketball courts in each gym. This project has (16) total BeatDrops by TruAudio installed strategically for those high gym ceilings with (4) of the BD-8s above each court, (4) custom-designed 15” subwoofers to add the low end throughout the gyms, (4) Crown CDI-1000 amplifiers that are specifically designed for commercial projects, an audio mixer with wireless microphones, and two VSSL A.1 units for music sourcing and their one-way paging capabilities.

The speakers were installed using 70V technology. Wherein two channels of a CDI-1000 are used with a custom DSP preset loaded and selected allowing both channels to be used to power the BeatDrops. An additional CDI-1000 was used to power (2) 15” custom subwoofers by utilizing one of the channels. The Crown amp is also configured to take the stereo source (left and right channel) and mono summing the signal so each speaker is playing the same thing throughout the project. An RCA cable is used to connect the Crown Amplifier with the BeatDrops to a VSSL A.1. An additional RCA cable was used to connect the subwoofers to the subwoofer output on the A.1.

Nets on Fire needed an awesome sound system not only for music but also for making announcements during tournaments. Knowing VSSL’s capabilities, I knew it would be the simplest and best solution for the project.
